As the electronic health record (EHR) market begins to dominate in the European Union (EU) from a technology perspective, so does the physician adoption of the platform. With EHR-using physicians expected to triple in the next 6 months, here are 3 key facts that you should know about EHR in the EU:

1. In Germany, a nationwide framework of EHRs has been implemented to interconnect 80 million patients, 270,000 doctors, 2,000 hospitals, and 300 health insurance companies.

2. In Italy, a universal EHR system connects hospitals, emergency care services, outpatient specialists, residential care, and palliative care; however, primary care is not covered.

3. In the United Kingdom, full implementation of a shared EHR system has been reached within primary care settings in the following countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

Also, it is important to know that promotion in the EU-based EHR offers a unique digital channel for messaging to healthcare professionals (HCP) and patients. Healthcare professionals interact with the EHR at various points along the patient care pathway (from before diagnosis and prescription to treatment support). Also, messages are embedded in the HCP workflow that can engage with HCPs as they interact with the EHR system.

Electronic health records in the EU are something that should be considered with all brand planning, as it is a consistent channel with great reach (within the EU).
